The Delfonics consists of original member and lead singer William (Poogie) Hart with background singers John Johnson and Garfield Fleming. William Hart is the heart and mind of this R&B group, which formed in 1960’s Philadelphia. Their patented dance steps accompanied by the brilliant songwriting of Hart captured audiences world-wide and made fans of their peers (from the 1960s through now): Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, The Manhattan Transfer, Swing Out Sisters, New Kids on the Block, Angela Bofield, The Jacksons, Regina Bell, The Fugees, and Missy Elliott.

Hart penned and The Delfonics recorded numerous hits --- charting in the United States and Europe, including the #1 Billboard hit, and Gold Record, “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind.” This song also won the Grammy for best R&B song in 1970. Hart has never stopped and The Delfonics have continued stunning audiences on stage and television. Hart’s songs are also currently heard in movies such as The Five Heartbeats, Crooklyn, Jackie Brown, The Family Man, and John Q.

Black Entertainment Television celebrated The Delfonics work in a 1994 tribute – recognizing the group as music industry legends. They also received a star on the Philadelphia walk of fame in 1996. Hart’s music is still covered by today’s artists and Hart is still actively writing. His song, “Ready or Not,” appeared on The Fugees’ six platinum-selling album, “The Score.” The Delfonics continue to be a strong influence in today’s music and they continue to perform throughout the United States and the world.

The Notations

This Chicago-based vocal group’s exceptional sound is rooted in the tradition of the urban soul music of the 1940’s through 1970’s --- Rhythm & Blues. Innovators themselves, The Notations are Chicago’s own and they have landed on the pages of music history, along with colleagues Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Temptations, The O’Jays, The Whispers, The Impressions, and The Dells. Robert Pruter chronicled The Notation’s contributions in his vital 1991 account of the Chicago music industry, Chicago Soul (Music in American Life).

Clifford Curry, Robert “Bobby” Thomas, Michael Thurman, and Marcus Gentry are The Notations. First signed by legendary TwiNight Records’ founder, Peter Wright, The Notations broke through with a major national chart single in September 1970, “I’m Still Here” (Billboard R&B #26), re-released by East Side Digital’s 1997 R&B compilation “East Side Story Volume 8.” From 1975 to 1976, The Notations charted four more times on Billboard. By that time, the group had moved to Curtis Mayfield’s label, Curtom Records. The great turmoil within the record industry gave the The Notations the thrust to start their own musical production company, Still Here Productions. The Notations continue to perform, never straying from their soulful foundation, smooth and sophisticated, yet invigorating the genre. Each vocalist, capable of being a lead or background singer, stretches the boundaries of soul and R&B. The Notations bring both excitement and pleasure to their original fan-base as well as to younger audiences that are rediscovering the originators of the R&B movement.
